| Beatles' Abbey Road piano to be auctioned Posted: 02 Aug 2010 07:30 AM PDT This Challen upright piano was used for almost 20 years at the world famous Abbey Road recording studios in London. (Alastair Grant/Associated Press) A British auction house is offering an opportunity to tinkle the ivories of music history with the sale of a coffee-stained piano from Abbey Road Studios that was featured on tunes by the Beatles and Pink Floyd. Bonhams said Monday the Challen upright, complete with cigarette burns, could fetch up to the equivalent of about $243,000 Cdn. "I think it is the first instrument from the Abbey Road studios to come on the open market," Stephen Maycock, the consultant for Beatles memorabilia at Bonhams, told the Telegraph newspaper. "The piano was just a tool of the trade and it has been used and abused, but that gives it character. It still plays although it would perhaps benefit from a professional tuner having a listen." It was used at the North London studios between 1964 and the 1980s. Its sounds could be heard on several Beatles songs, including Paperback Writer, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da and Tomorrow Never Knows. The instrument was also used on Pink Floyd's 1973 seminal release Dark Side of the Moon. The piano will be auctioned off — along with other Beatles memorabilia including photos from recording sessions — at the Vintage Goodwood pop culture festival in West Sussex, England, on Aug. 15.
