Liberal Member Of Parliament Bob Rae performed a little ditty called "Stephen Harper: He Prorogues" to the tune of The Beatles' "Let It Be" on Thursday (Jan. 21) at the Liberal Party Of Canada's Victory Fund Bash in Toronto.

Harper's a better pianist, but thankfully Rae can at least carry a tune.

The Beatles and a couple of 'Schmucks'

I saw a nearly-finished cut of Wes Anderson's "The Royal Tenenbaums" back before it premiered, and I was startled at the very end to hear The Beatles performing an alternative take of "I'm Looking Through You" over the final moments and credits.  Startled because, as Beatlephiles know, Apple Corps. has always been reticent about licensing Beatles music for movies.  Sure enough, when the finished film appeared, the track I heard had been replaced:  Anderson couldn't get The Beatles to agree -- or couldn't afford their asking price.

Last night I saw "Dinner for Schmucks," the new Jay Roach comedy about a group of rich men who cruelly invite idiots to a fancy dinner just to make fun of them.  And over the credits was The Beatles' version of "Fool on the Hill" -- not a cover, the real thing.  I was startled.  And then this morning I came across this story from the Los Angeles Times that explains, a bit, how the filmmakers got Apple Corps. to agree to let them use the song.

Let's just say personal connections and money were involved....
