“'The Beatles at OSU' brings back vintage music” plus 1 |
| 'The Beatles at OSU' brings back vintage music Posted: 23 Apr 2010 12:33 AM PDT By Evan Connet The Daily Barometer When musicians look back on the pedigree of musical excellence that has been created throughout history, it is truly a sobering experience to witness just how much talent and raw skill have been brought forth, especially in the modern era of recorded music. Certain musicians stand out amongst even these crowds, whether as a pinnacle of skill, fame or influence on music as we know it. It is impossible to trace the development of modern music without focusing on bands like The Beatles, four men from England who changed the landscape of rock n' roll for all time. Lucky for us, a group of musicians from all over Corvallis will come together to lend their skills to a contemporary recreation of two hugely popular classic albums in their entirety. On April 24 in the LaSells Stewart Center and May 1 in the Milam Hall Auditorium, this talented group of local musicians will perform The Beatles' last album released, "Let It Be," and Pink Floyd's "Animals," two landmark records of rock n' roll, if not all of the 20th century recording arts. This event, which has been put on annually since 2006, has featured some of the best musicians the Corvallis area has to offer, joining forces to form something that is more than your average cover band. "We've got about 18 or 19 people playing together this year," said Bill Cowell, "The Beatles at OSU" organizer and member. "We're representing eight local bands." The group of musicians always plays a single Beatles album and, since the second year, has added a Pink Floyd album or second Beatles album to the mix -- such as the two-disc "White Album" -- staying as true to the original recording as possible. For several years the group remained fairly consistent, with many members returning to play consecutively. That has all changed this year because once the 2009 event wrapped, according to guitarist and vocalist Justin Gibson, "it was announced that for various reasons, the group was planning on that show being the last one." | Beatles to dominate Headdress Ball Posted: 22 Apr 2010 05:13 PM PDT Sherry Lopez knows there'll be a price on her head Saturday night. And she's really thrilled about it. On Saturday, Lopez will join eight other Assistance League models for the nonprofit's 49th annual signature Headdress Ball at the National Orange Show. The more money the Headdress Ball raises, the more the Assistance League can help the children of San Bernardino with its Earl R. Crane Children's Dental Health Center and Operation School Bell programs. "We all have a price on our heads and I can't even explain how much fun our biggest fundraiser is," said Lopez, co-chairwoman of the event, as well as model. The presentation of the headdresses is a tradition that has grown more elaborate each year for nearly half a century. Community patrons agree to sponsor the fabulous designer creations that can weigh as much as 50 pounds, reaching heights of 10 to 20 feet. The lavish headdresses are designed by local florists and artisans and must be carefully balanced so they are wearable. Models present their spectacular chapeaux choreographed to Beatles' tunes. To carry out the Beatles theme, this year's models will don headdresses dubbed "Yellow Submarine," "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "Come Together," "When I'm 64," and "Imagine." Carol Dixon wears many hats - co-chairwoman, director, producer, choreographer. "It's really unique this year," Dixon said. "The show is in the round, and we think the fabulous Beatles theme, 'Imagine,' is applicable to the Assistance League and what we do - imagine a better world for children, which goes along with our dental center and Operation Bell programs."A live tribute band, Paperback Writer, will supply the music. The band also dresses in the costumes of the era representing the Beatles during their early years, the Sergeant Pepper era, and their Hippie years. Dazzling tables carry through the Beatles theme for the evening dinner performance. The cast features more than 100 performers, ages 4 to 64, according to Dixon. "People can look forward to a really spectacular show."
