The drummer was welcomed into the world on 7 July 1940 in a house on Madryn Street in the band's famous hometown. The property first came under threat in 2005, when Starr himself spoke out against.... A British politician has stepped in to help save the birthplace of BEATLES legend RINGO STARR from demolition. The house at 9 Madryn Street in Liverpool, England is under threat of demolition after officials at the city council decided to tear down 445 properties in the area in a bid to regenerate the neighbourhood. Beatles fans and campaigners are fiercely opposing the move, and last month (Dec10) they renewed calls for government intervention after politicians placed a protection order on the famous London crossing featured on the cover of the band's 1969 album Abbey Road. Housing minister Grant Shapps has now written to Liverpool City Council requesting a temporary reprieve for 9 Madryn Street, and insisting the final decision should be made by the residents of Liverpool. He writes, "Any regeneration project will generate strong feelings. But when what many people consider to be a culturally important building - such as the birthplace of the drummer in the world's most famous band - is at risk then feelings are going to be even stronger. "That is why, before a single bulldozer rumbles along Madryn Street, I want to ensure that every option has been considered." The fidelity was very limited due to the use of only a single microphone suspended from the ceiling as well as a slow recording speed to allow for more material to be fit on the tape. Much of the music on the tape is by The Beatles and there is also material from Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers and The Dominoes. The tapes ended up with Ted "Kingsize" Taylor (lead singer of The Dominoes) who claimed John Lennon accepted a round of drinks in exchange for the rights to the recordings. About a year later, after The Beatles had gained much popularity, Ted tried to sell the tapes to Beatles manager Brian Epstein, but because of the poor sound quality, Brian only offered 20 British pounds for them and that was turned down. After trying unsuccessfully again to sell the tapes, this time to Apple, Ted teamed up with Allan Williams, The Beatles first manager...read more and hear the tune here.
