A San Francisco-based music web site has launched offering unlimited DRM-free MP3 downloads for $25 (£16) a month -- amongst them the Beatles back catalogue.

Since the Fab Four's remaining members and other Apple Corps shareholders have yet to reach deals with more established online distributors, say iTunes and Amazon, this throws the legitimacy of Zaptunes into question.

While a spokesman for the firm states it has negotiated with the "top label companies," Digital Music News reports that the site may be hearing from record company lawyers soon. "EMI Group is already drafting the legal paperwork against this shenanigan," a source told the site.

Meanwhile, Zaptunes claims to have reached a deal with a different multinational. On Hypebot, a spokesman said, "We have a contract with Sony Music, who hold the rights to most of the Beatles music. I am sorry, but right now I can not give you more details about this contract."

Yet earlier this month, Yoko Ono warned that a Beatles download deal was a long way off, as reported by Spinner -- and as John Lennon's widow she has a strong say in developments. Certainly no one then had heard of Zaptunes. Currently, the Web site offers free downloads for 30 days in return for your credit cards. Buyer beware, we say.

Alicia Keys, Ozzy Osbourne, The Beatles make VH1 great artist list

Alicia Keys, Ozzy Osbourne, The Beatles and Michael Jackson are to be featured on a four-night special called "100 Greatest Artists of All Time," VH1 said.

The list was determined by a poll of well-known music artists and industry experts.

With Jim Shearer serving as host, the program is to have a two-hour premiere Sept. 6.

"In 1998, VH1 launched the same list as the channel's first countdown special; however; much has changed since the dawn of the new millennium. VH1 puts this debate up for a vote again to see which rock pioneers still matter and which new acts rate in the age of download-to-own music and ever-changing pop culture.

The countdown will include special, rarely-seen performance footage along with brand new, totally original interviews with music's most famous faces," the network said in a news release Tuesday.

The top 5 in alphabetical order are The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones.

Ranked Nos. 6-10 are Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Elvis Presley, James Brown and Stevie Wonder.

Richard Lester has donated the working scripts for The Beatles' movies "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help" to the British Film Institute.

The BBC said the texts are part of the 78-year-old filmmaker's archive, which is going in its entirety to the institute.

Also included in the cache is correspondence from Hollywood stars Audrey Hepburn, Raquel Welch and Charlton Heston.

"The organization has always been very helpful to me," the British broadcaster quoted Lester as saying. "It is a pleasure for me to be able to offer them the detritus of my working life."
