"A Day in the Life" pairs lyrics inspired by newspapers and the life of John Lennon, it said, adding that it was Paul McCartney's idea to have classical musicians perform what producer George Martin called an "orchestral orgasm," Rolling Stone said.

McCartney, 68, received the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from U.S. President Barack Obama in June, an experience he called "unbelievable." Band mate Ringo Starr celebrated his 70th birthday in July and received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in February. Both men still record music and tour.

Lennon was shot dead outside his New York home in 1980 and the fourth member of The Beatles, George Harrison, died from cancer at age 58 in 2001.

Lennon was quoted as saying in 1966 that the group was more popular than Jesus. The Vatican's newspaper earlier this year referred to The Beatles as "satanic" but praised the band's music and said its record Revolver, coincidentally released in 1966, was the best pop album.

Check out the list of the top 10 Beatles songs, according to Rolling Stone:

1. "A Day in the Life"

2. "I Want to Hold Your Hand"

3. "Strawberry Fields Forever"

4. "Yesterday

5. "In My Life"

6. "Something"

7. "Hey Jude"

8. "Let it Be"

9. "Come Together"

10. "While my Guitar Gently Weeps"

The Beatles, in honor of the 40th anniversary of their final album "Let it Be," had their top 100 songs chosen by Rolling Stone in a collector's edition of their latest Collectors Edition.

For some, ranking the Beatles' top songs may be nearly impossible as the group had many hits and a loyal following. However, Rolling Stone felt confident in their choice and posted the top ten songs online on Thursday to give a taste of the edition.

The list will surely draw ire from fans of the group, who may think a specific song is better or worse on the list. Maybe your favorite Beatles song isn't on the list.

Who knows, maybe Rolling Stone will take a bad list and "make it better," to quote the seventh song on the list.

The top ten Beatles songs as chosen by Rolling Stones

1. A Day in the Life
2. I Want to Hold Your Hand
3. Strawberry Fields Forever
4. Yesterday
5. In My Life
6. Something
7. Hey Jude
