A piano used by the BEATLES at the famed Abbey Road Studios has been withdrawn from an auction.

The coffee-stained instrument, which the Fab Four used to record several tracks, was slated to go under the hammer at Bonhams auctioneers in West Sussex, England and was expected to fetch $225,000 (£150,000).

But the sale was stopped at the weekend (14-15Aug10) - with organisers refusing to reveal why.

A statement posted on Bonhams' website reads, "This lot has been withdrawn."

The Challen upright piano was played on Beatles tracks including Paperback Writer, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da and Tomorrow Never Knows and was a fixture at London's Abbey Road studios during the 1960s.

Beatles Rarity Of The Week – Press (original mix)

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 05:16 AM PDT

This week's Beatles Rarity of the Week ties up another loose end from one of those stray Paul McCartney releases. By 1985, Paul was ready to give his music a more contemporary sound and teamed up with producer Hugh Padgham for that very reason. Hugh had worked with Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel of Genesis, along with other big names like The Police and XTC. Having written a few songs with former 10cc member Eric Stewart, as well as a few on his own, Paul was now pumped to get an album out. The result was the August 1986 release Press To Play, which ended up with a few other guest musicians you may have heard of before. Along with Eric Stewart, there was Pete Townshend (of The Who…in case you didn't know that) and Eddie Rayner (from Split Enz). Read on and play the tune here.

Beatles piano withdrawn from sale: auctioneers

Posted: 15 Aug 2010 07:25 AM PDT

LONDON (AFP) – A coffee-stained piano used by The Beatles at Abbey Road studios has been withdrawn from sale, the auctioneers said on Sunday, without giving a reason for a decision.

The battered Challen upright piano, which can be heard on hits such as "Paperback Writer" and "Tomorrow Never Knows", both recorded in Abbey Road in 1966, was valued at more than 100,000 pounds.

"This lot has been withdrawn," Bonhams auctioneers said on its website. A spokeswoman told AFP she could not comment on why the sale was cancelled.

It was due to be sold as part of an auction at the Goodwood vintage festival of music, fashion and art.
