Rare Beatles recording still headed for October auction

A rare Beatles recording owned by a Unioto graduate and former radio and television news personality is still on track for an October auction -- although it is more uncertain now than ever of what type of price it will fetch.

Larry Roberts, who among other places during his career spent stints with WBEX-AM and WCHI-AM radio locally and NBC-4 TV in Columbus, was working in radio when he attended a press conference with the Beatles on Aug. 17, 1966, at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto. The recording of that press conference, on which Roberts can be heard asking John Lennon about a controversial statement he had made at an earlier time to reporters about the Beatles being bigger than Jesus, has garnered quite a bit of attention this year.

As the Gazette reported in May, California auction house Bonhams & Butterfields announced an audio copy of that press conference recorded by Canadian photographer Paul Hourigan would be auctioned off and that it was the only copy in existence. The expected price the item would fetch was believed to be between $20,000 and $25,000.

When Roberts heard the claim of it being the only tape in existence, he came forward with his copy -- a development which garnered attention from around the world -- and the auction house had to pull back its claim.

In June at the Bonhams & Butterfields auction, Hourigan's tape failed to meet the $20,000 minimum sale price.

Roberts told the Gazette last week that despite the failure of the Hourigan tape to sell, he still would take his copy to auction with Heritage Auction Galleries of Dallas in late October. In a report appearing in The Canadian Press, he said bidding for his tape would start in the $7,500 range.

He also indicated in that report that he also has other Beatles-related items to sell, including an audio interview with Ringo Starr, photo negatives and radio reports from a pair of concerts in Cincinnati and Indianapolis.

Sean Lennon Responds to Angry Beatles Fans Over Lady Gaga Photo

Posted: 13 Jul 2010 06:10 AM PDT

Sean Lennon has defended Lady Gaga on his Twitter page, after irate Beatles fans lashed out after seeing that she had played John Lennon's white Steinway piano in New York.

Lennon had posted a Twitpic of Gaga sat at the piano in her famously skimpy clothes. A caption said, "With Gaga at mom's house, she's belting on the white piano," to which he received a torrent of negative messages from "uptight" fans.

Several people posted messages of "disappointment" after seeing the "unworthy" famous Lennon piano being used by the 'Poker Face' star, to which Lennon replied, "Pianos are meant to be played. Why is everyone so uptight? What should we do, lock it away in a dusty room? So judgemental..."

Responding to one particular Tweeter, Jennifer Flatman -- Twitter handle lavielibre23 -- John Lennon's youngest son retorted, "Come on, lighten up ... life's too short, there's enough real problems in the world," before later adding, "Firstly, he gave that piano to my mother for her birthday, it is hers. Secondly, he was not not uptight the way you seem."

Gaga had been visiting the Dakota Building -- where Lennon's mother Yoko Ono lives -- when the photo was taken.
