LONDON - A COFFEE-STAINED piano used by the Beatles when they recorded Paperback Writer at London's Abbey Road studios is expected to sell for more than 100,000 pounds (S$209,419 150), an auction house said on Wednesday. The battered Challen upright piano, covered in cigarette burns and coffee stains, can be heard on hits such as Paperback Writer and Tomorrow Never Knows, both recorded in Abbey Road's Studio Three in 1966. The piano also features on Pink Floyd's 1973 Dark Side of the Moon LP. 'I think it is the first instrument from the Abbey Road Studios to come on the open market,' Stephen Maycock, the consultant specialist for Beatles memorabilia at Bonhams auction house, said in the Daily Telegraph. He added that without its association with the studios, the piano would be worth 'a very modest sum.' 'It is a bit battered and is covered in stains and cigarette burns,' he said. 'It has been used and abused - but that gives it character.' The instrument was retired from service in the 1980s and is now set to be sold at auction at the Vintage Goodwood festival in West Sussex, southeast England, on August 15. -- AFP Five Filters featured article: Headshot - Propaganda, State Religion and the Attack On the Gaza Peace Flotilla. | Beatles Revisited: Snapshots of the band's only Minn. visit Posted: 20 Jul 2010 05:45 PM PDT ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A local photographer's snapshots of the Beatles only appearance in Minnesota are the centerpiece of a new display at the Minnesota History Center. The exhibit, "The Beatles! A One-Night Stand in the Heartland," features a collection of images taken in 1965 by Bill Carlson, an eager 17 year-old aspiring photographer with a press pass. "At that time, I wasn't a big Beatles fans. I was into jazz and classical. But it sounded like an interesting event to go to and it turned out to be," Bill Carlson said while standing among the prints of the photos he took on August 21, 1965. There are photographs of the band's arrival at Chamberlain Field, the mobs of fans waiting to greet them, their press conference and performance at Met Stadium. The Minnesota History Center's display is the first major exhibit of the images, some of which have never been published. Many of the photographs were are taken from Carlson's book of the same name. The images will be on display through September 12th. Bill Carlson's print website has more information about his book and prints of his Beatles photos. On Tuesday, July 20th, the History Center's Nine Nights of Music series will feature tunes of the Beatles performed by local cover band RetroFit. It is part of a full evening of events, which also includes a book signing with Carlson, a screening of the movie "A Hard Day's Night" and a costume contest. The Minnesota History Center's website has a schedule of the evening's events. (Copyright 2010 by KARE. All Rights Reserved.)
