Beatles - Lennon Doodle Raises 56000

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 08:32 AM PDT

A doodle drawn by late BEATLES star JOHN LENNON has raised nearly $56,000 (£37,250) at auction.

The caricature was scribbled by the musician during one of his famous 1969 'Bed-In' demonstrations with his wife Yoko Ono to protest the Vietnam War.

The sketch was created during Lennon's week in bed in Montreal, Canada and it has now sold for a massive $55,875 (£37,250) at an auction in London.

The sale at Christie's on Thursday (24Jun10) also included a jacket once worn by late superstar Michael Jackson, which fetched $33,750 (£22,500) -10 times its estimated price - as well as a guitar once owned by The Who star Pete Townshend and another which belonged to the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones.

Rain channels Beatles hits at Melody Tent

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 11:07 PM PDT

HYANNIS - Admit it. Most of the time what you really want out of a concert is to hear the band's hits, faithfully performed, note for note, exactly the way they sounded on the CD, record or tape.

That's pretty much what you got last night at the Melody Tent. And when the hits are as good as "I Saw Her Standing There," "This Boy," "Hard Days Night," and "Day Tripper," who cares whether you are watching a Beatles cover band. Besides, relatively few people can claim they saw the world's most popular group live. After all, the Fab Four stopped touring in 1966 and their last live performance was in 1970.

So get over it. Seeing Rain is the closest you'll ever get to the real thing, and the real thing was great. That's what you realized after last night's opening song, "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."

Remember, this is not a concert, it's a show that recreates the looks and sounds of a concert. So, when Ed Sullivan, via a recording on large video screens, mumbles his way through a fatherly intro and, with a wide swing of his arm, introduces "The Beatles" and the lights come up. ...

Honest, its like you're at Ed Sullivan Theatre more than 40 years ago and that supercharged machine of a hit making band blows you away with "I Wanna Hold Your Hand." Constant repetition might have deadened your ear to how powerful and good the Beatles really were. And they were a live band that got fans on their feet and dancing.

Again, Rain is the closest you'll get to that and these guys are talented, whether its Joey Curatolo (Paul) playing to audience with Paul's sweet smile and chirpy patter, or David Leon (John) with Lennon's leonine looks and the slight sneer in his voice, or Joe Bithorn (George) delivering a note-for-note, but nevertheless searing, rendition of the guitar solo that Eric Clapton played on the original version of the song. Ralph Castelli (Ringo) delivered a steady beat, a head bob and a better singing voice than Ringo on "With A Little Help From My Friends." Mark Lewis rounded out the group, providing the keyboard and synthesizer sounds along with the recreated orchestral back-ups and other effects used by the Beatles when they became a band that loved sound experimentation in the studio. Lewis even duplicated the full orchestra crescendo in the Beatle's masterpiece, "A Day In The Life."

But there has to be a down-side to this kind of performance, or else why wouldn't every band just slavishly re-create hits in concert, and send the fans home happy. Okay, so some spontaneity, and improvisation, maybe even the opportunity to hear a group explore a different interpretation of an old favorite or, freed from the producer's hand, just give it some real juice.

Still, these guys are all excellent musicians, and when the material is this good who could complain? It's hard to say that Rain is not pushing some creative boundaries in the anarchic opening to songs such as "The End" or "Revolution." Rain kicked it out with the rocking "Revolution" from the White Album, and Bithorn was great, really shredding while still remaining faithful to the original, of course.

So, maybe Rain is just a cover band. But they know their material, and they love playing it. What's wrong with that? How often, when a band comes out for their encore, can you really say that you don't know what you want them to play? They've just blazed their way through a list of songs that has few equals in rock.

What more do you want?
