Abbey Road on the River: Beatles festival kicks off in Louisville

Posted: 28 May 2010 12:22 AM PDT

If the band's name isn't evocative enough -- "Hard Dazed Knights" -- then its nonstop, 2½-hour medley of the entire 214-song Beatles catalog makes it a must-see at this year's Memorial Day weekend extravaganza, Abbey Road on the River.

Led by Nova Scotia musician Hal Bruce, Hard Dazed Knights will perform the unique composite of the Fab Four's timeless music for the first time in Louisville.

"We're calling it the 'Deadly Medley,' because it's killing us," joked Bruce, its arranger, who has performed a solo version three times, including once at the Louisville festival in 2005. "I knew all the songs from playing requests as a solo act -- 'Let's hear "Penny Lane"' or 'What about "Twist and Shout"' -- and it took about eight months to put it all together, segueing the songs together in snippets. But with a band, you have to have every note, every tempo, and every transition in place. We never get a chance to enjoy a song. You've got 20 seconds to get in and out, and you're thinking constantly, skipping ahead to the next song. It's physically and mentally draining."

Fans loved the solo rendition, which earned Bruce induction into the Abbey Road on the River Hall of Fame, and festival organizers aren't fazed that its performance by the five-member band -- from 7:15 to 9:45 p.m Friday -- has never before been attempted.

"It's going to be a masterpiece," said festival founder Gary Jacob. "I've always said that if Hal was better known as an artist, this performance would be a worldwide televised event."

Now in its fifth year in Louisville and the largest Beatles festival in the United States, Abbey Road on the River draws 30,000 spectators to the Belvedere and Galt House Hotel & Suites to buy collectibles, participate in seminars, compete in contests, see movies, and hear 70 bands from Norway, Germany, Canada, Sweden, Puerto Rico, Scotland, England and the United States.

"It's fun to see 10 artists do 10 different versions of songs in a 60-hour live Beatles tribute," Jacob said. "It's a phenomenon that brings people together. And I love Louisville. I'm from Cleveland but Louisville is really my second home. I come here a week a year, and every time I come, I understand why people like it so much."

The Five | Paying tribute to the Beatles

Posted: 28 May 2010 12:23 AM PDT

It'll be five days of peace, love and rock 'n' roll during Abbey Road on the River in Louisville -- the largest Beatles tribute festival in the world.

Come to think of it, tributes to the Liverpool Lads come in all forms of media: albums, movies, concerts, T-shirts and even circus acts.

Here are five that say we love you, yeah, yeah, yeah:

• "1964" - The Tribute is hailed by critics and fans as one of the most-authentic and endearing Beatles tribute shows in the world.

• The Rutles. Parody band, created by Eric Idle and Neil Innes, features the "Prefab Four." Inmitation being the sincerest form....

• "I Am Sam." The 2001 film starring Sean Penn features a Grammy Award-nominated soundtrack of Beatles songs as covered by other artists.

• "The Beatles: Rock Band." The interactive video game is the next best thing to having John, Paul, George and Ringo perform in your home.

• "Love." The Cirque du Soleil's celebration of Beatles music is complemented by aerial performers and urban freestyle dancing.
